A Visit To Fort Travis

June 2011

This June afternoon Zack and I took a ride out to Port Bolivar for a ride across the ferry to visit Fort Travis, a Texas fort initially built in the 1800's to protect settler's against Indians and fortified during World War One to protect against attacks to the Port of Galveston. The site has a couple of large concrete bunkers with various underground tunnels joining them together. The interior of the bunkers and underground tunnels have all been closed off to the public and are quite overgrown with native vegetation, but the park provides access to the outskirts of these bunkers which are quite impressive to see and look like a "castle" to little ones like my grandson Zackery. We had a great time roaming around the Fort Travis area today.
