A few years ago, a small blackberry bush started to grow beside one of our trees. Makayla picked a blackberry, ate it, and loved it. Each year the bush grew bigger and had more berries for Makayla to pick. It has become an annual tradition now for Makayla to watch her blackberry bush grow throughout the seasons waiting for summer to come so she can pick the berries.
The bush is dormant in the winter and Makayla says, "Can I pick some berries today?". Grandaddy answers, "The berries don't grow in winter. We'll have to wait 'til summer when the berries grow."
In the spring, Makayla says, "Can I pick some berries today?". Grandaddy answers, "See the little white flowers on the bush? Those will turn into the berries in summer and you'll be able to pick them then."
As the flowers drop their petals and turn into little green buds, Makayla says, "Can I pick some berries today?". Grandaddy answers, "See those green berries? Soon they'll turn red, then black, and then you'll be able to pick your berries."
As the spring rains come and the green berries turn red, Makayla says, "Can I pick some berries today?". Grandaddy answers, "See those red berries? Wait a couple of weeks and then they'll turn black, and then you'll be able to pick your berries."
When the summer sun comes the red berries turn black and Makayla says, "Can I pick some berries today?". Grandaddy answers, "This is a great day to go and pick your berries. Enjoy my friend."
...and so she does.
