Before heading out this trip, my coworker sent an email telling me that tonight was the peak of the Persied meteor shower. The moon was supposed to come up in the middle of the night and ruin the maximum viewing time, but the email mentioned that a few spectacular meteors might be seen just after sunset because that's when the angle of the earth caused some of the comet dust to skim across the top of the atmosphere instead of just diving straight in. This was sure the truth. Mom went on to bed, but I stayed up and I saw a couple of "plain Jane" meteors once the sun went down. Later I was looking low to the horizon and saw this fantastic large fireball twirling into the atmosphere in a corkscrew fashion. I had never seen a fireball like this before. About an hour later I looked up to see a bright red meteor streak across the entire length of the sky leaving a looooong trail behind it. When I saw this event, I found myself whispering "Oh My God!" because of its intensity. Just after I said that, I heard way off in the distance someone yell "Waaaaa Hooooo!". Apparently someone else saw this event too. I have never seen meteors like these two before and am glad I stayed up to see them. (This image isn't a real picture though, but the real thing was such a memorable sight!)
