The test crew. I'm the third one from the right. Just outside this room was a large mockup of the Russian Buran version of the space shuttle and a number of proton rockets used by the Russian military for nuclear missiles and such. Russian guards with big guns in this facility made sure we didn't take any pictures outside of this room. I'm not too certain that they liked us taking this picture all that much either. An interesting thing about this room, is that the Russians used an old wall crank telephone here to communicate with other rooms in this facility. This type of phone was replaced with rotary phones in the 1970's in the US, but was still in use here. Another sign of economy in Russia during this time - make use of what you have as long as it still works.
