If you want some french-fries, you have to use the term "Kartofil" here (the Russian word for potatoes). They don't quite understand what the term "french-fry" means in relation to the slim cut and fried potatoes. You will get a burger though if you ask for a "Big Mac". Burgers are an "American only" food specialty item so the phrase "Big Mac" is understood to get you one of the Micky-D burgers here.

Funny thing is that ground beef isn't typically sold in any of the stores in Russian, but occasionally you can find a specialized place that will sell you what they refer to as "McDonald's meat". I had the opportunity later to have some home cooked burgers in Moscow at the temporary Russian home of one of the American astronauts (Ken Bowersox) with some "McDonald's meat" he had found and purchased just for our meal. The Russian interpreter that was with us wasn't at all sure what to do with the burger and used a knife and fork to cut it into small bite sized pieces while the rest of us American folk picked up the burger in both hands and ate it in true American style with the juices running down our arms.
