I'm a software developer and one of my first tasks at NASA was to develop the software for the barcode readers to be used to track inventory on the space station. This image of the first Russian cosmonaut (Sergei Krikalev) to travel to the space station onboard the space shuttle sparked a good memory of mine of being in Russia in 2000 to demonstrate the usage of the bar code reader to the Russian space agency. I remember being in the Russian mockup of the first two space station modules where Sergei was training and he offered me a bite of some "space bread" he had been eating. These were tiny little loaves of compact bread that were made to ensure bread crumbs wouldn't flake off and float around in space. I can boast here and say that I broke bread with a Russian cosmonaut onboard the space station (even if this particular space station happened to be on the ground). |
