After 26 hours of driving, we make it to our hotel in Vernon, Tx. late Thursday. Here is a picture of my extended family that Cyndi and I took with us. My family consists of two pigeons which I rescued after they had been hit by a car. I let them go after they recovered, but they kept coming back so they became family. Next to the pigeons are a Cockatiel and 3 parakeets. Three box turtles are in the box next to them (they can't swim and would die in a flood). The little pink cage contains a sugar glider given to us from a family that couldn't care for it anymore. Under the pigeons is my Burmese python. I always wondered how I would move this monster if something like this happened - now I know that it can surely be done. We also brought 6 of our 8 cats. We were unable to catch two of them which are more feral in nature than the others. It sure bothered me though leaving them behind. Two ferrets (one given to me by Christine Vo) made their temporary home in the little brown cage. At the far end are three cages containing 8 additional snakes (I sure couldn't leave them inside a cage to drown). And of course we had to bring Fluffy Dog which we found as a stray just a couple of months ago. We decided to leave all of the water turtles at home. They could fend for themselves in a flood for sure. Can you believe that we managed to get all of these animals inside the truck with us for the 26 hour trip? (Yes... they were all inside the truck to keep them from dying in the heat in the truck bed.) I was quite disappointed on the trip to see people letting their animals loose on the highway rather than keeping them safe with them. If I can do this with a very small truck, a typical pet owner of one, two, or three pets surely could have done it.
