We took highway 146 which was the evacuation route for our area. It was a slow going experience. The road was completely full and the traffic moved at 1-2 miles per hour (when it actually moved). It took us 12 hours to drive 100 miles (no exaggeration - this is the truth). A small child in a car next to us was holding up a sign that said "We need something to drink". Cyndi got out and pulled some drinks from our cooler and gave it to them. They said they had been on the road for about 10 hours from Galveston without anything to drink. Night came and we were still on this road. We heard that gas was becoming short so we stopped at every station that was open and kept a full tank even if we only drove just a few miles.
